What If A Tree Didn't Fall In The Forest?
Updated Feb 11, 2008 with new photos - all at bottom.
The Zen master asked his student the riddle about "What if a tree fell in the forest and nobody heard it, did it make a sound?"What if the tree was in an artist's community?
... and it hadn't fallen yet? It was dead, sure. But dead trees sometimes take years to fall.
David Carapetyan is an artist, so when he got the call he figured it was time to rally his friends and family and put the tree to work serving humans and their need for self expression.
This was the invitation that he got from the newly formed artists colony, or whatever it is that one calls something like this:
obviously when an artist gets an invitation like this, he/she don't sit on it, so being David's brother like I am, I got this email offering to give me a place on the ladder to work.
If I had shown up, I would'a had plenty-o-company
You will note above, a human hanging from ropes. Art has many great features of course. This would no doubt be one of them.
The child is probably asking her mother "Why....?" questions. When you get older of course, you learn that why questions go nowhere, whenever you see people hanging from ropes in the middle of a forest without a paycheck involved.
This returns us to the question above from the Zen master. Turns out he was only parroting a question that one of his nephews or neices has asked. Kids are smarter than us when it comes to riddles.
Humans On Ladders Doing Art Work
This could have been you.
Chain saws are an important tool when carving trees. Recommended.
Taken from the correct angle, the tree looks quite erect.
David dedicated this photo to our mother who elected not to make the three hour drive up from Austin to help carve the tree.
I think it might have been the ropes and chainsaws, David. The scenery would have been beautiful, as well as hanging out with all the humans (expression not taken literally, of course).
All in all it was reported to have been a great day and a great experience for all involved. Kudos to David for having the foresight to invite everyone else to the party.
David has a few hundred more pics if you're interested, and some video too!
David sent me these last three a week later. The colors in this shot are beautiful.
